Continuing our Rock Tour of the UK and Ireland, introducing the main event for today - Callenish Stone Circle
And the very able support group Callenish Three
We followed this road to the very end, it was long and windy. Was it worth it? Well the trip was worth the petrol but the destination was a bit of an anti climax. We went in search of (amongst other things) a pub and came up empty handed.
Craigard B&B was a wonderful place to stay, picnic overlooking the valley, Our laundry washed and (thankfully) saved from ironing, fresh cooked crab for lunch and best of all they have an unequaled roadside pick up service for the seriously lost.
We drove into Stornaway on Sunday morning before crossing the nonexistent causeway to Harris. There was not a soul about, so we thought we would steal a picture of the Lewis Castle gates.
From Tarbert on Harris we trekked down the east coast of Harris in search of our hosts favourite beach. This place along the way is called Lemerway.
Still looking for that beach!
Found it! Being from Australia we can appreciate fine beaches and this was a ripper. 4 miles of white sand and a handful of people. To get to Leithcard Beach we had to pass the first graveyard on the right, follow the road for a bit pass the second graveyard on the left, park and follow the creek. Simple wasn't it?
This was just on the way home from the beach. Finsbay is pretty awesome.
We are in contention with Scottish Tourism who refused to give Coel na Mara Guesthouse a 4 star rating because it lacked an established garden, when from every room in the house you could see mountains, lochs and green rolling grass. In every way they exceeded our needs and expectations and we rate them five stars
Karen and Seona on the ferry to Skye curl up for bye byes after having Peter Rabbit read to them.
Uig Two - the island strikes back! Ferry Terminal on Skye.
Not big enough to rate a mention on our road map, but pretty none the less.
The Old Man of Storr, another rock in our collection.
All over the UK and other islands are these standing stones, some real, some jokes perpetrated by cynical locals. All have a fascination for this band of traveling rock groupies.
Ancestral home of the McLeods. The flag was given to them by the fairies the castle more prosaically acquired.
If this is the size of the leaves, just wait till you see the pumpkin.
This B&B located at Breakish heading to the Scottish mainland.
They saw us coming - they charged us £5.80 to cross their wee bridge.
Karen and Seona at the much photographed home of Connor McCloud, no they didn't see Sean Connery or jump from the battlements.
I have seen many pictures of this castle and every one is different. A very lovely location on Loch Alsh with the highway passing by the front door.
Plockton. Loch Dubh has survived the departure of the bad men from Glasgow. The BBC may have left Plockton, but we'll keep coming back.
Great place for a convalescence. The intrepid band of explorers all caught colds and had to take to our beds, (and the bar). They even served us dinner in our room to stop us spreading the contagion to their other customers
Hamish McBeth fans will recognize this picture.
Plockton Harbour with the sun shining on the Laird's castle.
The truth is revealed! This is the real publishing team behind this website. Please note that owing to illness a local stringer (rubber duckie) volunteered to help too. |
